iPod Nano: How to Load Single PodcastsSwitching to Manual Mode Allows for Greater Flexibility
Customizing your podcast mix is easy. Learn how to upload individual podcasts to your iPod manually. Transfer the podcasts one at a time.
The iPod Nano, when it's in the default sync mode (the easiest to use), provides several options for uploading podcasts into your portable audio device. When one’s iPod is connected to a computer, and one selects the "Podcasts" tab from the top of the main homepage, the following uploading options are available:
Limited Options in iPod's Sync ModeThese selections may be adequate for some podcast listeners. But hose with lengthy podcast lists or those who want to upload specific combinations of podcasts into their iPods may find it frustrating. Suppose someone wants to carry with them the 10 most recent episodes of KCRW’s Left Right and Center, the most recent episode each of the Chaos Chronicles and the February 5th episode of CBC’s Q. Using sync mode they’re out of luck, because any selections made from the list of options above apply to all selected podcasts – meaning one could load in the 10 most recent episodes of all three shows, or the most recent of all three, but no combination of the two. And no individual podcasts by date. Manual Mode Offers Greater OptionsBy switching their iPods to manual mode, users can create their desired mix of podcasts, by loading individual podcasts into their audio devices. To switch to manual mode: 1. Connect your iPod to the computer 2. Select the "Summary" tab at the top of the page There are three sections on the Summary page: iPod, Version and Options. 3. In the Options section, check “Manually manage music.” You’ll see a message asking: “Are you sure you want to manually manage music in your iPod…?” 4. Click “Yes.” 5. Click “Apply” in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. To load in individual podcasts: 6. From the left-hand menu, select Podcasts. This will bring up the complete list of individual podcasts you have downloaded. 7. Select the individual or multiple (using CTRL + Left. Click on a PC) podcasts you wish to load into your iPod. 8. Drag and drop the individual podcasts into your iPod (which appears under "Devices" in the left-hand column.) It’s only possible to check that the podcasts have in fact been loaded successfully once the iPod has been disconnected from the computer. CAUTION: When in manual mode, always eject your iPod before disconnecting it, by clicking on the Eject icon to the right of your iPod’s name under "Devices." (As a reminder, the international “no” symbol appears as long as an iPod in manual mode is connected to a computer.) 9. Click on "Eject" and disconnect your iPod from the computer 10. Use your iPod’s click wheel to select the Podcastscategory (Music --> Podcasts). The dragged-and-dropped individual podcasts should appear in your podcast list. Happy listening!
